Big Round Hay Bale Feeders for Sheep and Goats

It’s aggravating to see wasted hay and baleage. Big Bale Feeders offer a solution. Feeders allow access, while reducing the amount a sheep can pull out at once. This significantly reduces waste and utilizes more of the bale.

Big Bale Feeder Panels
Reinforced, double rod eating holes for pushy rams and ewes

Big Bale Feeder Panel

Panels are 40" wide and 48" tall. Each has four 8" x 12" feeding holes. Note: Not for use with cattle, horses or horned animals.

During the winter months, we make heavy use of bale feeders on our farm. Over time, we noticed a hay waste problem. So we set out to make a better sheep feeder for round and square bales.

Premier’s Big Bale Feeders use the same sturdy, hot-dip galvanized construction as our proven Welded Wire Panels, but we have added reinforcement rods around the eating holes for extra durablity. The result is a stronger, more durable panel with the same “one mouthful at a time” feed-saving design.

Features:

  • Pays for itself in 1 year! (See below.)
  • Hot-dipped galvanized steel construction
  • (4) reinforced, double rod eating holes for pushy rams and ewes
  • Adapts to most round or square bale sizes. (For small bales use 5 panels; large bales use 6 to 7 panels. Average of 40 ewes per 6-panel feeder is advised. See our website for more information.)
  • Folds flat—easy to store and move
  • Adult sheep can’t get inside it
  • Typical lifetime of a feeder is 3 to 5 years. Sometimes longer if used with smaller/lighter animals.
  • Ships FREE via ground service when ordering more than one panel

How does a Big Bale Feeder pay for itself in 1 year?

Record-high forage prices are driving up costs. It’s more important than ever to reduce losses from wasted hay and baleage. Calculating lost $$ due to wasted hay provides a picture of the value of a better feeder design:
  Wastage % Wasted Hay $$
Big Bale Feeder 10% $264
Others 25% $660
Assumes 40 ewes each eat 5 lbs of hay for 165 days and hay costs $160/ton (8¢/lb).
$396 difference pays for a Premier feeder quickly!

Big Bale Feeders

As our herd has expanded we decided to purchase another of the Premier panel feeders and were very pleased with the robust construction. It is much more rugged than our original feeder and we anticipate this new feeder to last many seasons in our operation. The design is well thought out and the panels are very well made.

X-Tuff Single Sided Hay Feeder
Extra strong galvanized metal feeder for sheep and goats

X-Tuff Single Sided Hay Feeder

X-Tuff Hay Feeders stand up to the strongest rams and bucks. “L” hooks allow feeder to hang over existing panels or gates.
  • Very strong! Most folks are impressed when they see these.
  • Inverted 5 in. “L” hooks enable feeder to hang on panels and boards up to 2" wide
  • Just the right size for a flake of hay
  • Heavy enough to keep large ewes and does from knocking it down

★★★★★

This is an extremely sturdy hay feeder which holds enough for several goats. I like the design—goats can’t get their feet into it, nor do they pull out a lot of the hay and waste it. Hangs on most fences. Excellent value.

Ask A Sheep Expert
Sheep Q&A

Q: Our ewe flock has seen an increase in pregnancy toxemia during late gestation. What could be causing this?

A: A simple explanation might be plastic net wrap in the rumen. This cannot be reversed and it may take months for the issue to show up.

With high feed costs, some producers are grinding their hay to reduce feed waste and to improve the digestibility of poor quality forages. When tub grinding, the plastic net wrap must be removed prior to grinding. Plastic is NOT digestible! And worse, plastic tends to accumulate in the rumen. The result may be thin ewes even though they are being fed adequate amounts of feed. The real crisis happens in late gestation when nutrient needs jump, but intake is now limited by plastic waste in the rumen. These ewes are at risk of ketosis and will generally be in poorer condition throughout the year.

Removing net wrap can be difficult and annoying, but producers must take the time to accomplish this task to keep their flock healthier.
