Fencing Tips for Winter Weather
Maintenance now = less downtime and hassles later

Fewer hours of daylight means winter is just around the corner. Crop farmers are busy harvesting, while livestock producers are busy planning for the cold months ahead. Don’t neglect to maintain your fences and properly store your energizers.

Checklist for Electric Netting

Litzclip® video

Litzclips® offer a quick and simple way to repair electrified netting and other 3mm conductors.

✔  Repair broken conductors using Litzclip® or brass ferrules. A netting repair kit includes all of the essentials for patching tears and holes made by animals, weed-eaters and lawnmowers.
✔  Replace broken support posts and gates.
✔  Roll up the netting and hang in a barn or shed. Choose a location away from feed sources where mice are likely to nest. Don’t store netting on the ground! It’s an open invitation to rodents.

Checklist for Solar Energizers

Learn how to prepare your solar energizer for storage during the winter.

✔  Before storing, disconnect the leads from the battery terminals.
✔  Keep 12V SLA batteries in a temperature controlled climate. Recharge batteries frequently even when not fully discharged. Don’t allow the voltage to drop below 10.5V for an extended period. To extend battery life, use a trickle charger. Repeated fast charging will reduce the capacity of the battery.

Winter Tips for Permanent Electric Fences

✔  Inspect your fencing while the weather is still warm. Use a fence voltage meter to test for voltage loss. If you’re in an area that receives a lot of snow, install a cut out switch on your lower lines. Replace any fence lines showing wear.
✔  Before the first snow, create an emergency fence repair kit. Include a spool of wire, a crimper, insulators, tensioners and connectors.
✔  Use a Pos/Neg fence when grounding conditions are poor. Remember, water is a good conductor of electricity, but snow and ice aren’t. A heavy snow will drain your fence of power and reduce its ability to deter predators and livestock.

With proper planning, grazing season will be here before you know it!

Keep your animals warm this winter
Two of our customer favorites!
Prima Heat Lamp

Prima Heat Lamp

Common heat lamps are often blamed for barn fires, scorched wool and overheating. The “Prima” is better in every way—strength, safety, protective guard, and hanging system.

Used to warm chickens, ducks, puppies, lambs, goat kids or for any animal that is sick or cold. Combine with a heat lamp stand for hanging about poultry brooders.

Carbon Fiber Heaters

Carbon Fiber Heaters

High-output space heater for chicken coops, lambing pens or horse stables.

Built-in “kill switch” turns the unit off if an unsafe angle occurs. So if it falls or is smashed, the heater is immediately disabled. Protects your buildings, livestock, poultry and pets.

Carbon fiber bulbs have a very long life and are efficient—98% of watts become heat.
