How Electric Fence Works

This 48" net is perfect for sites with installation problems for permanent wire fences (hills, rocks, dips, curves, trees, no machine access). It has stronger, heavier, larger PVC posts with longer, thicker, steel spikes, supporting the net better through wind, rain, ice and snow.

It's also available as a Pos/Neg fence for dry, sandy or rocky conditions. Ideal for situations when there is too little moisture in the soil to properly ground the fence.

PermaNet compared to temporary, ElectroNet and ElectroStop

  • Designed to be left in one place for months or years. For this it has stronger, heavier, larger PVC posts with longer, thicker, steel spikes, supporting the net better through wind, rain, ice and snow.
  • It’s taller, 48"—therefore more reliable.
  • It’s a very good conductor (low electrical resistance). This is critical as weed contact may become heavy.
  • Supplied in many lengths—to enable users to buy the right length for each situation.

Key Differences

  • PermaNet® 10/48/6 is 48" tall and has 10 horizontal strands (9 conductive) with vertical struts every 6". Built-in line posts (0.75" dia.) are spaced every 12'5". Choose the Pos/Neg option when there is too little moisture in the soil to properly ground the fence.
  • NEW! PermaNet® Pro 11/48/6 has braided horizontal conductors, not twisted. More metal on the outside of the strand enables better animal-to-conductor contact. And the tighter weave resists snags when moving the fence in rough terrain and pastures. It is 48" tall and has 11 horizontal strands (10 conductive) with vertical struts every 6". Built-in line posts (0.75" dia.) are spaced every 12.5'. It's Pos/Neg capable when there is too little moisture in the soil to properly ground the fence.

To Install

The same “unroll and then unfold” process applies to all electrified nets. Minimal strength or skill needed (and no tools). Extra supports such as FiberTuff™ step-in posts are useful at corners, curves and ends. You will need a fence energizer to electrify the net.

We suggest installing PermaNet with two people. Why? Because of its extra weight and longer posts. It can be handled, installed and removed by one person, but having another person on each end of the posts doubles the productivity and makes it easier for both. Pushing or stepping posts into the soil is still a one-person task. And so is pulling the posts out of the soil. But these tasks take more effort because the spikes are both larger and longer. (After all, it doesn’t work to have a strong, well-supported post without large and long spikes.)

Weeds must be controlled for PermaNet to remain effective. Either move and mow as needed during the growing season, or spray herbicide along the bottom strand to kill the vegetation. If you can’t do this, PermaNet may not be the right fence for you.

How To Purchase

  1. Measure the fence line.
  2. Choose the length and the amount of netting needed. (Example: For a 170 ft fence line, order one 150 ft net and one 25 ft net.)
  3. Select an energizer kit (includes charger, ground rod and wireless tester).
  4. Add support posts as needed for ends, curves and corners, and any accessories.

Precautions

Electric fence is a pain barrier, not a physical barrier. A common mistake is not electrifying it. Animals may escape or become entangled (and may die). On a % basis, entanglement is very rare, but it can and does occur. If animals are scared or starved it will not keep them in. The first time you put the animals in the net, you should be available to watch them for a while. That way if one were to get into the fence and get caught, you can turn the power off and get them loose.

Warning! Due to risk of fire, do NOT use continuous output energizers with electric netting or electro-plastic conductors such as rope, twine or tape. Use only with a low or wide impedance intermittent pulse energizer. (Fi-Shock™ brand energizers which are sold as low impedance, continuous current output should NOT be used with electric netting.) All energizers sold on Premier’s website use an intermittent pulse and are suitable for use with electric netting.

Dry conditions and wintertime usage may reduce the effectiveness of electric fencing. Ice and heavy snow can flatten netting and thereby damage it.

Dry or frozen ground may cause post spikes to bend or break if inserted with force. Pilot holes may be needed. We recommend using drivable or single spike posts in hard soils. Double spike posts provide more stability when the ground is soft.
