Scent Caps
Product Details
Attach scent caps to electric fences to attract deer and other wildlife. When baited with apple scent, animals will sniff the conductive metal cap with their sensitive noses and receive a painful, memorable shock. They learn to avoid the fence and graze elsewhere.
Scent caps are made from conductive aluminum and include an absorbent cotton ball with wire twist for wrapping around an energized fence conductor (e.g. polywires and tapes).
Common Uses
Baiting (and rebaiting!) is worthwhile if you value the trees and plants that you are seeking to protect.
Specs
- 1" diameter aluminum cap
- Cotton ball and wire twist, included
How to Use
- Use one cap every 50 to 100 feet, depending on animal pressure
- Attach scent caps after the fence is constructed, but before turning on energizer
- Straighten wire twists and hold cap (cotton side down) to bottom side of rope
- Wrap wire twists around the conductor several times on each side of the cap to create a good electrical connection
- Twist cap upward and apply 1 to 3 drops of apple scent (sold separately), then reorient cap so the cotton side faces down
- Reapply scent every 10 to 30 days

Purchased 25 scent caps and apple scent. Skimpy on the cotton. No directions. apple scent was thick and was not immediately absorbed by cotton. When released, if the cap angled down, scent ran out on the ground. Could adjust some by placing the wire around the cap on the side. Others had to be removed and put on the wire again to keep apple scent from running out. Second application days later when cotton had been weathered, scent absorbed better and didn’t run out as quickly. Shipping is expensive compared to the price of caps and scent. Recommended because I could not find another vendor for the apple scent.

Caps are easy to install and replenish with scent. Trying to discourage deer to avoid another bout with meningeal worm (endemic to deer with slugs and snails being the vectors transmitting to sheep). Have not seen deer since installing the caps and replenishing scent frequently. Thanks for an easier solution than the old peanut butter on aluminum foil trick!

The rope and 35" step-on support stakes were extremely easy to install for rabbit control in my garden. Tested and received 8000 pulsating volts. Wonderful application for small animals.

I have been gardening the same spot for almost 40 years. Only occasionally did I have problems with deer and that was mostly minor- trampling a few plants, knocking over tomato cages, nibbling plants. I could live live with it. It all changed last year. The previous year beans were were planted on the adjoining 50 a then corn last year. The deer cleaned me out- ate EVERYTHING in the garden. I built a 4'woven wire fence with a high tensile wire at the top, then ordered the bait caps. The deer were still getting in the garden. Since putting the caps on, I have seen no signs of deer! HURRAY!
