The Craftsman
In the 1800s, a man by the name of Josiah Countryman was both a furniture maker and an undertaker. One of his daughters, Irma, caught her father’s woodworking “bug.” She later encouraged her son, Fred, to carry on the woodworking trade. When Fred took on an apprentice in 1975, little did he know that his granddaughter would go on to marry the young man.
Shortly after their union in 1981, the husband and wife team began selling their unique wood pieces. Today, four of their seven children now help in the family business, lending their talents of design, lathe and laser carving. Their signature pieces are graced with precise angles and classic symmetry, and their showroom has become a popular destination for Iowa’s tourists.
Creating exceptional, individually designed pieces is the emphasis of this successful small business. The items they make together display their insistence for quality woodworking and their love of family working together.
